Dr. Van Heerden is a cataract and refractive surgeon, retina sub-specialist and comprehensive general Ophthalmologist.

Dr Van Heerden is the former Head of Unit, Surgical Ophthalmology Services at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He is a Director of Armadale Eye Clinic, Mornington Peninsula Eye Clinic and is the Principal Surgeon at Eye Laser Specialists.

He is an expert cataract and refractive surgeon. He is the first Ophthalmologist in Victoria to offer SMILE surgery. He does his cataract surgery at Windsor Private Hospital.

He has a sub-specialist interest in medical retina conditions which include Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy.

Dr Van Heerden grew-up in South Africa. He studied his medical degree at Stellenbosch University. He started eye surgery in a rural hospital in South Africa. He then went to The United Kingdom where he furthered his surgical skills and became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists-London. He did his post-graduate training at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town and became a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists, South Africa.

He moved to Melbourne and completed a year’s fellowship in Medical Retina and Inflammatory Diseases of the Eye at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2009.

Dr Roufail completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at Monash University. He undertook and completed his PhD in medicine at The University of Melbourne. He completed his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, which included a final year as senior registrar and cataract surgery fellow. This was followed by three years of advanced surgical training in Vitreo–retinal surgery which was undertaken in Auckland (NZ) Nottingham (UK) and Melbourne.

Dr Roufail is currently a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialist (ANZSRS), the American Society of Retina Specialist (ASRS) and the European Society of Retina Specialist and the Australian Society of cataract and refractive surgery (AUSCRS).

Brent completed his medical degree at the University of Otago in 1998, and advanced surgical training in various New Zealand and Australian hospitals.

After completing a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the West Midlands Neurosciences Centre (2009-2010), he returned to Australia to undertake a 12-month Oculoplastic and Orbital surgical fellowship at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. In February 2011 he accepted a Consultant role as Ophthalmologist, Oculoplastic/Orbital Surgeon and Neuro-ophthalmologist with the Auckland District Health Board, New Zealand. He and his wife Jennifer were actively recruited to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in late 2014, taking up positions in early 2015.

Brent is a member of a number of national and international societies, including the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons (ANZSOPS), the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), and Neuro-Ophthalmology Society of Australia (NOSA).

Dr Fan Gaskin realised her passion for ophthalmology during her ophthalmology rotation at the University of Auckland’s Medical School. After graduating with Distinction, she pursued an anterior segment research fellowship and completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) thesis on keratoconus. Following her ophthalmology training in New Zealand, she undertook two clinical glaucoma fellowships in 2013-14 in Auckland and Melbourne, respectively. She was then actively recruited to continue with Melbourne’s Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital as a glaucoma specialist. She was also offered a sought-after position at the Centre for Eye Research Australia’s glaucoma unit as a clinical researcher.

Dr Fan Gaskin is committed to upholding the high standard of ophthalmic care in Australasia. She is very actively involved with the RANZCO in the following roles:
